Students are responsible for writing both a feature (like Hacked--to read the complete story on Wired: ht.ly/ft9qZ) and an alternative story form (like Pack Like a Pro) for their magazine, therefore, this assignment will introduce students to the two types of writing required in the course. For the following stories, please make predictions about the magazine's target audience by making assumptions about the reader demographics. Be prepared to discuss the following for each article.
1. a) What content is being communicated and what kind of audience would this information benefit? b) Give an example of how the tone and word choice within the article is suited for the preferred audience?
2. a) What kind of advertisements are in between the pages of the stories or on the article's website? b) What details within the advertisements can be used to make assumptions about the article target audience?
3. a) Overall, do you think the targeted reader is male or female? Why? b) What age range do you think the targeted reader falls within? Why? c) Does the targeted reader have a family with kids? Why? d) Do you think the targeted reader attended college? Why?
If you prefer, you can use the printer-friendly format of these questions to record your answers.
